The sweet potato, which comes from South America, is currently one of the trendiest foods around . But even if the name suggests it: the sweet potato has just as much in common with the German potato as apples with pears. What is the difference between a potato and a sweet potato?

The name “potato” and growing underground are the only things that the two tuberous plants have in common. The two types of vegetables are prepared in the same way, but the taste of the tubers differs like day and night. The sweet potato is sweet , true to its name, namely really. The “green”, i.e. the leaves of the sweet potato, are used as food in the home countries of the tuber, just like the sweet potato itself, and eaten as a spinach-like accompaniment to various dishes.

Which is healthier: sweet potato or classic potato?
You have now learned that there are many good nutrients in sweet potatoes. But what predominates? Is the sweet potato healthier than the conventional variant?

If you look at the calories, there is a winner: the traditional potato! This comes to around 70 calories at 100 grams, while sweet potatoes have a little more to book with around 110 calories.
On the other hand, sweet potatoes contain more fibre and a lower glycaemic index – which means that we stay full longer.

Both variants are both low in fat and high in calcium, protein, magnesium and potassium. However, sweet potatoes contain more vitamin C, beta carotene and vitamin E.
As its name suggests, the sugar in sweet potatoes is also abundant. A total of 4.2 grams of sugar make up 100 grams, while regular potatoes only add 0.8 grams! The conventional potato also wins in terms of phosphorus and vitamin B content.

Ultimately, neither of the two variants can be found to be clearly healthier. Both varieties contain valuable nutrients and should be on your menu regularly.
